I think the title of this chapter is self-explanatory.
How did we get to the point when 'Lucky Charms' became a health food --bragging about how high in fiber and low in fat it is, enhanced with minerals and vitamins.
Almost a bowl of salad isn't it?

Reading Update
It was quite humorous to me that I was reading this book while eating some type of cheese filled crackers on Delta Airlines, Holiday Inn breakfasts and a couple stops at Dunkin Donuts over the weekend.
At least Portland embraces a lot of the lifestyle changes the author talks about. I will definitely be hitting the farmer's markets a bit more this Spring - and asking them what type of fertilizer they are using.......off to purge the donuts out of my system.

In Defense of Food
I thought the introduction and first little bit are a little dry but now he's getting into the 'nutritionalism' facade and it's getting really interesting. Makes me a little angry seeing how the food we're told to eat isn't based on fact but on special interests.

First Book -- In Defense of Food -- Michael Pollan

I guess we were thinking about one month to read it which would be 4/5/08. Then have the next person pick a book.
This book In Defense of Food is the follow up to the Omnivore's Dilemma, which was a great book. http://www.michaelpollan.com/omnivore.php. In Defense of Food is suppose to be focusing on the FDA 'Suggested Daily Allowance' conspiracy. Ha Ha --i.e. his motto --Eat Real Food not processed nutrients.
There will probably be science and math involved. Just a warning :-)
